J and L Rope Illustration
a sketch of j. and l. at my home studio at the rope/technique lab i host very occasionally. i would like to start this up again with some regularly but need a co-organizer.
it’s been hard to find the balance between intimacy within a regular group and enough people to fill out the space (at max we’ve had 15 people, at minimum just a couple) unless i make this a more public event rather than invite-only; i do want to make it more public, but am having a hard time figuring out how to manage the transition into what i would want to be a more formalized setting where i define ground rules for the space.

Lasercut to blockprint process for Slit/Sword
I’ve wanted to use lasercutting to help with the more tedious aspects of blockprinting for a long time. I finally had an opportunity to test this with an illustration that had received a lot of positive feedback and sufficient time before the event that I could plan on bringing prints beforehand.
Laser setup I’m using L.’s laser which she has generously set up in the woodshop. Lightburn for the software. Settings are here:

Slit/Sword
Tasked with doing a flyer for Envelope’s “Samhain” event.
We usually do a bit of visioning beforehand about concept, but no one had time or drive to do this. I looked at inspo of some heavy metal posters and was drawn to a heavy perspective shot of an elf in armor: in particular I thought the sword widening with the forced perspective was really striking, and this kind of forced perspective was a concept I wanted to practice. (Fwiw, the final result did not end up with the kind of exaggerated effect I was looking for, but since people liked the teaser so much and G. said that it probably wasn’t worth it to correct, I didn’t attempt to go back and do proper perspective.)

Rope Lab 8
Sapphic Resistance
DDD Illustration
Dark Dawn Day The prompt for this was a dark caverous place where queer characters move from the lower levels to the lighted exits. This is ofc a Monument Valley screengrab that I vectorized. I then hand-illustrated different characters who would be in the dark in this Escherian space, ascending or descending into the light.
The speakers are real models of the Paraflex subs and SynTripP tops that we were going to bring to the party.

Metal logo algorithm
Draw a symmetrically-mirrored version of word Try to average letter morphology such that there is approximate bilateral symmetry while still creating recognizable letters Now that the rough shape is in order, work on the line quality of each letter Create “hairs” that roughly follow the same orientation (imagine a vector field) Result: drew this for @anarchogoth to put in her store, incorporating her request for brand “A” elements

Rebound Flyer
Again doing a more playful style for a daytime outdoor event for the Quadra speaker inaugural live test (shown both behind each DJ name and as a ref on Lola Bunny’s jersey).
Watched Space Jam in preparation for this and got a ton of feedback about shorts bulge and basketball ear direction from relevant nerds.
Also probaly the first time I did a Procreate -> Photoshop layer export for finer control of each layer’s color for the final (which also made it easier to solicit votes about what color combo to use in the final).
